Archaeology Month
A Tour into Florida’s Past
Saturday, March 24, 2012
We begin at Mala Compra Plantation where Brent
Handley, Professional Archaeologist who worked on the site, will lead us
through its fascinating history of as we view the ruins. In operation from 1816
until burned in 1836 during the Second Seminole War it was owned by Joseph
Martin Hernandez, Florida's first Delegate to the U.S. Congress and the first
Hispanic to serve. The physical remnants of the main house, well, and kitchen
provide rare structural evidence of coastal plantation layout and residential
construction in Florida during the early 19th century.
Then it’s on to St. Augustine where
we have a guided tour of the Dow Museum made up of nine historic homes, dating from 1790 to 1910, as
well as the rich collection of architecture, architectural ornaments, antiques,
and fine art on display. The property combines interactive experiences,
exhibitions and objects to tell the story of St Augustine and Florida’s
historical and cultural development. Learn about the lives of the original
occupants placed in context within the greater story of Florida from the
Colonial to the Territorial Period and from Statehood to the Flagler Era.
Next we head to St.
Augustine Lighthouse where we have lunch and begin our Behind
the Scenes Tour. View shipwreck artifacts and
parts of the historic light station not available with general admission,
including stops in the conservation lab and Lighthouse
Archaeological Maritime Program office. Look at artifacts from the American
Revolution recently recovered from the ocean floor and learn about the
processes use to recover and conserve these items. Even if you have visited the
lighthouse before, you will discover how the museum works and how we
are learning about our past from artifacts buried in the seafloor.
Motor coach transportation, lunch, all admissions included.
Walking throughout the day, including on uneven
surfaces will be necessary.
